Gaming in Toronto this weekend [Mar. 27th, 2009|10:04 pm]

Ad Astra has scheduled a gaming track, and info on it can be found here.

Gryphcon is also on in Guelph, and its schedule can be found here.

The Hairy Tarantula is holding its quarterly sale this week, and is having a bargain basement convention. It sounds like it's mostly them clearing out backstock, but it might be interesting.

A Preliminary Gaming Con List for 2009 [Jan. 23rd, 2009|01:00 pm]

Niagara Boardgaming Weekend, February 5-8. I know nothing about this event, other than it's happening very soon.

CAINE, March 19-23 2009 is the convention for the the Camarilla, White Wolf's fan club. There will be enough LARP to choke a goat.

TABSCon March 21, 2009 is a quarterly boargaming con put on by the Toronto Area Boardgaming Society. It's got a $5 admission and is held in a church hall.

Gryphcon, March 27-28, 2009 is put on by the University of Guelph gaming club.

Ambercon XX, April 16-19, 2009 is a convention dedicated to all things Amber, including extensive games of Amber Dicesless RP and LARP.

UBCon XX, April 17-19, 2009 a con put on by the University of New York at Buffalo gaming club. I know nothing about this show, other than it's in Buffalo so we'll be going for wings.

Transformers Con, April 25th and 26th, 2009is a con dedicated to all things Transformers. They may have a few games of the WotC transformers card game, but they may not. Who knows?

Cangames, May 15-17, 2009. The oldest gaming con in Canada. It's held in a curling arena, so you can buy booze there. Trust me, that's not to be undersestimated. eyebeams can tell you how awesome that is.

Anime North, May 22-24 2009 is supposed to have a good gaming track, but I've never been able to attend. They've got guests and TRPA is running some gaming events there.

TABSCon June 27th, 2009 is the second TABScon of 2009.

Canadian National Gaming Expo 2009, August 28-30, 2009 is part of FanExpo Canada, the largest Media event in Canada. Guests and a preliminary game list will be announced in May, with scheduels up at the beginning of June.

TABSCon September 12th, 2009 is the third of TABS regular boardgaming events for 2009.

Phantasm: Sept 26 & 27, 2009 is a gaming con held in Peterborough at the Peterborough library.

TABSCon December 5th, 2009

Some gaming may be at:

Polaris, formerly known as Toronto Trek, July 10-12, 2009 has pretty much left gaming to die since luciancarter left. They have a LAN room, and some rooms are available for gaming, but none has been organized in years.

Ad Astra, March 27-29, 2009 has for the past few years had a room with boardgames and card games in it and had a few SJG MiB there. The non scary ones, too.

Info is still needed for:

King Con was held in Kingston last year at RMC. To say I was tremendously pissed to miss it is an understatment, because it was held in Yeo Hall, which has a lot of goodM memories for me and is a great venue for a gaming con.

Pandemonium did not happen last year, ostensibly because the organizer and his wife had had a baby. We'll see what happens this year.

RushCon 2009 has no gaming that I know of. But it's a con for Rush fans, so that's awesome.

Ontario cons [Jan. 22nd, 2009|02:25 pm]

Anyone got any info on gaming cons upcoming in Ontario?

I know CanGames is coming up on May 24. Is Baycon a go for this year? King Con in Kingston? Anyone know if Pandemonium is going to happen this year?

There's also the con in Peterborough at the library, right?

TCon seems to have given up gaming entirely, although Ad Astra is running it in that one room that it always runs in.

Am I missing any? Upstate New York or the Detroit Area or Montreal too.

I'm working on getting stuff together at GX this year. We'll see what's up.

The Dungeon Masters documentary at TIFF [Sep. 11th, 2008|12:59 pm]

Just a note that there are two more screenings of The Dungeon Masters at TIFF this week at the new AMC theatre. One is today at 3:15, the other is tomorrow at 9:00 pm.

Making a documentary on pop culture has many dangers, from nostalgia to smugness and condescension. The Dungeon Masters is a rare example of a film that avoids all of these pitfalls and portrays characters rich in complexity. It follows three Dungeons and Dragons gamers living in unglamorous corners of lower-middle-class America. Over the course of one year, we see how their real-life aspirations are fuelled by the worlds of their imaginations. Scott, whose self-deprecating humour has not translated into success as a budding novelist, struggles to support his wife and son. Elizabeth, an attractive twenty-three-year-old who dresses as a dark elf, seeks companionship after a failed marriage. Richard, who has a penchant for killing make-believe characters, aspires to reconnect with the real stepson he abandoned. Even if you find it hard to identify with the role-playing fantasy lives of these individuals, it's easy to empathize with their human selves.

Thankfully, it appears not to do for D&D fans what Trekkies did for Trekkies.

edit: Apparently, Torontoist didn't like it, but (insert obnoxious hipsters joke here).

Underworld Larp - Weekend Event [Sep. 4th, 2008|10:14 am]

Our last event was incredible and we broke our attendance record with just shy of 50 players.  Check out our segment on The Space Channel if you are interested in seeing what we are about

"The Mistress of Pain"

When: Sept 19th to 21th, 2008
Where: UW site, Acton On
Cost: $40 (First game free)
Blankets: 1

Underworld LARP's 6th event of the season, this is our final event before Halloween. With winter on the horizon it's time for old debts to be paid and loose ends to be tied off. The recent events within the cursed grey elven forest have drawn the attention of more than just mortal eyes, and when that happens the Firstborns take notice. What state will Jericho be in when all hallow's eve comes calling?
